Singer discusses Latin American Jewish Communities with Bush

                  08.11.2005

WJC Governing Board Chairman Israel Singer has met with George Bush to discuss issues of concern to the Jewish communities of Latin America
"Democracy is defined by the way minorities are treated by the ruling majority and therefore the fate of Jewish communities in Latin America is one way to measure Democracy in the continent", said Rabbi Israel Singer to President Bush following the President's speech in Brazil.
In a meeting with President George W. Bush, who was in Brazil meeting with President Lula da Silva of Brazil Sunday November 6, the World Jewish Congress Governing Board Chairman Israel Singer addressed issues of concern to the Jewish communities of Latin America.
In his comments Singer said that actions against the Jewish community center and the Jewish school in Venezuela earlier this year have "compromised the level of comfort of the Jewish community in Venezuela". Singer sought President Bush's support for the necessary steps to ensure that Venezuela protects the rights and safety of all its citizens, specifically its minority communities.
Answering questions from reporters after the meeting, Singer said that "it was an excellent opportunity to make the President aware of the concern for the wellbeing of Jewish communities is Latin America shared by the larger Jewish communities of the United States."
With Singer were Rabbi Henry Sobel of the Jewish community of Sao Paulo and Jack Terpins, President of the Latin American Jewish Congress and other leaders of Brazilian civil society.
