Israel to Switch to Solar Energy by the Year 2020
14.01.2009
Yesterday the Israeli government adopted the program initiated by National Infrastructure Minister Benjamin (Fuad) Ben-Eliezer on construction of power plants based on natural energy in the Negev and Arava deserts.
The suggested program is to construct a new station each year, so that by the year 2020 around 10% of the total amount of electric energy in Israel should come from alternative sources, such as sun and wind.
The key objective of the new program is the feasible provision and financial maintenance of projects, which are based on technological developments that enable the maximum usage of climate conditions of Negev and Arava deserts.
Currently Israel gets less than 1% of the produced energy from renewable sources, while most of the days in the country are sunny.
