Birobijan Jewish Community to Continue Charitable, Educational and Cultural Projects

Practically all charitable, educational and cultural programs run in the "Freud" Jewish community of Birobijan in the year 2008 will be preserved in the incoming year. This was announced to the Jewish News Agency by the community leader Rachmil Leder, who received the final budget numbers from the key sponsors – the Federation of Jewish communities of Russia and American Distribution Committee.
According to him, the funding of the programs, even taking inflation into account, appeared to be higher than expected. In November and December 2008, the community feared to receive considerably reduced funding, which could have caused the closing down of several directions of activities.
"Some changes have still occurred," said Rachmil. "For instance, we had to close a charitable cafeteria in the village of Amurzet (It is still functioning in Birobijan).
But the cafeteria clients from Amurzet will get grocery packages in the local store, thus not losing anything. The community saved cash assets on maintaining the cafeteria."
"At the same time, the program of buying medications for the children who need them will be funded almost three times more," underlined the leader of the community.
R. Leder was sad to announce that the funding of Guest Performance program - a tour of community artistic ensembles around the cities of Far East - has been stopped.
"But we will not shut the program down," said Leder. "We count on the help of local sponsors, who never refuse to aid us."
