JERUSALEM (JTA) - An Israeli soldier was killed when a remote-controlled bomb detonated along the Gaza border.
The bomb exploded as soldiers patrolled the border area near the Kissufim crossing Tuesday morning. Three soldiers were injured in the attack.
The Israeli army responded by firing at several targets in Gaza, according to reports, and Israeli Air Force helicopters hovered in the area.
A Palestinian farmer was killed in the clashes, Ha'aretz reported, citing Palestinian medical workers.
There was no claim of responsibility for the attack. It is not the first violation of the cease-fire. On Jan. 19, an army patrol was fired on near the Gaza border and eight mortar shells were fired at Israel.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that Israel would retaliate after being briefed at a drill at the southern army base Ze'elim. He said he expected that attempted border attacks would continue despite the Gaza operation and current cease-fire.
