Deaths of 805 Thousand Jews Murdered in Belarus Commemorated
27.01.2009
The word "Holocaust" entered modern history as a definition of the policy of Nazi Germany, which caused the extermination of six million Jews in the years 1933-1945. Ph.D in history studies Emanuel Joffe devoted his life to research of the Holocaust.
"In October Gennady Vinnitsa defended his thesis called 'Genocide of the Jewish Population of Eastern and Central Belarus.' He was born in Orsha, but lives in Israel. His data confirm me research: he has been calculating scrupulously. The number of Holocaust victims in Belarus is 715 thousand local Jews and around 90 thousand Jews from European countries. So 805 thousand Jews were killed on Belarussian territory," Professor says.
The Institute of Holocaust victims and Jewish resistance heroes remembrance Yad Va Shem awards the title of the "Righteous Gentile" annually to people of different nationalities who were jeopardizing their lives to save Jews from the Nazi genocide. Some Belorussians also rescued Jews during the war. More than 500 Belorussians have been awarded with the Righteous Gentile title.
