This year again, the European Jewish Community Center (EJCC) in Brussels will shine up Europe's capital by lighting the Menorah during the eight days of Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, on Rond Point Schuman, the square opposite to the European Commission and European Council headquarters.
The Menorah (also called Chanukiah) is the eight-branched candelabra with a ninth branch for the "Shamash." The Shamash (“helper”) candle is used to light the other eight candles since it is forbidden to use the Chanukah lights for any purpose other than viewing.
Jews around the world light Chanukah candles to remember the miracle of the Maccabees' victory and the miracle of the oil that burnt for eight days in the Holy Temple.
On December 5h, at 17:00, the fifth Chanukah candle will be lit followed by a live concert by singer Moshe Ben.
Special activities for children will also be organized and a hot buffet will be served.
On December 8 at the Berlaymont, the European Commission, eight Chanukah candles will be lit, during an event organized under the Patronage of European Commissioner for Culture and Education, Androulla Vassiliou.
On this occasion, an exhibition „Art in all of us,” (www.artinallofus.org) will be displayed.
