MK Cabel resigns as Labor secretary-general

MK Cabel resigns as Labor secretary-general

Knesset Member Eitan Cabel sent a letter to Labor Chairman Ehud Barak on Tuesday morning, in which he informed him of his decision to resign as the party's secretary-general after accusing Barak of "trying to remove me from the party".
"With painful sorrow, I have reached the conclusion that the political home you are creating is no longer my home," Cabel wrote to Barak. "As of tomorrow, I will work as a regular party member to restore passed glory, so that we can resume the way of (former Prime Ministers) Ben-Gurion and Rabin. You need a janitor, not a secretary-general or director-general, and I am not such a person.
The MK concluded his letter in a message to his fellow party members: "The sky has grown dark in our party, but we will live to see the dawn of a new day."
Cabel is one of the Barak's opponents in the Labor faction. In a recent party convention he delivered a moving speech in which he voiced his opposition to Barak's desire to join a Likud-led government. Barak secured the votes of most of the Labor Central Committee members, and went on to try and dismiss the secretary-general.
The party's Central Committee was slated to reconvene early next week in order to vote on the dismissal. Following appeals filed by members of the two Labor camps, the party's appeal board criticized Cabel and the other "rebels" on Monday for not fulfilling the Central Committee's decision that the party should be part of the coalition.
The matter was turned over to the party's court, a move which as far as Cabel was concerned, was the final straw.
Labor sources have estimated that Cabel's chances to secure a victory at the Central Committee were slim, and that he may have decided to avoid the meeting. There are now those who believe he may retire from the party or from politics.
