                  Kiev Seminar on Jewish Education

                  13.05.2009

                  Kiev Seminar on Jewish Education

Yesterday in Kiev, the International Center for Informal Jewish Education "Melamediya" and the Institute for Judaism Studies in the CIS, under the leadership of Rabbi Adin Shteynzalts, began a seminar on training professionals in the field of informal Jewish education. This is the first seminar of its kind in Ukraine.
It explores two parallel education programs. The first of them prepares specialists in a wide scope of disciplines, who are aware of the innovative methods of non-formal education, the second – professionals, oriented on work with the Jewish families, consultants, who would help to create a Jewish atmosphere in the house. Both programs include extensive training in the field of Jewish history, culture and traditions.
The seminar is attended by over 60 representatives of Jewish communities in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Lithuania, Latvia and Germany. The program is supported by the Federation of Jewish Organizations of New York, the L.A. Pincus fund and Claims conference.
In addition, on 17 May there will be a round table on "Prospects of development of informal Jewish education in Russian-speaking communities," which will be attended by leading specialists of Jewish education in Ukraine.
The "Melamediya" center will submit new programs, specifically designed to help Jewish organizations, which are increasingly aware of the importance of informal education. There is no doubt that non-formal education requires both improvement of the professional level of staff, and defining an overall conceptual platform, combined with the harmonious development of Jewish community life.
The seminar will finish on May 19.
