Prisoner exchange talks resumed
06.06.2009
Egypt reportedly has reconvened prisoner-exchange talks between Israel and Hamas.
The Jerusalem Post on Friday quoted Hamas officials confirming that its representatives had traveled to Cairo to resume the talks. Egyptian-brokered negotiations over an exchange of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners for IDF Cpl. Gilad Shalit, captured by Hamas in a June 2006 cross-border raid, broke down in March, before Benjamin Netanyahu assumed office as prime minister.
Netanyahus predecessor, Ehud Olmert, had agreed to release prisoners who had participated in killings, a key Hamas demand, but had insisted that the prisoners leave the region once released.
