Grand opening of the renewed synagogue of Rosenberg in Kiev.

                  06.03.2003

Opening of the renewed synagogue of Rosenberg was held in Kiev. Masters from the "Ukrrestavratsia" (restoration department) managed to restore the appearance the architect Nikolai Gardenin conceived in the original plan in 1894.
The plan was not carried out in the Tsar times, because of the government's veto on building synagogues in Kiev. The same happened during the Soviet times.
The choral synagogue in 29 Schekavitsa str., the center of the Jewish religious and spiritual life of Kiev, was build by the merchant Gabriel-Yakov Rosenberg. The renaissance of the spiritual life started in the early 90s, especially after Iakov Dov Bleikh, an energetic and young man, became the synagogue's rabbi. It was Iakov Dov Bleikh who initiated the restoration of the temple.
Iakov Dov Bleikh, the chief rabbi of Kiev and Ukraine said: "I think that this day has a great significance for the Jewish community. Anyone can enter the House of God, feel comfortable and see beauty and splendor."
The first official circumcision in many years was performed in August of 1990. Jewish couples could get married in accordance with the custom
